Abstract
In an attempt to elucidate the effect of trivalent and hexavalent chromium on the sciatic nerve of mouse electron microscopic study was performed to examine the fine structure of sciatic nerve of mouse after administration of chromic chloride(Cr^(3+)) and chromium trioxide (Cr^(6+)). Mice were receiced 200§·/§¤ of chromic chloride and chromium trioxide solution ad libitum, and were sacrificed after administration of chromic chloride and chromium trioxide 4 and 8 weeks. The results were summerized as follows; 1. Myelin sheath of sciatic nerve affected by chromic chloride and chromium trioxide was collapsed markedly compared with control group. 2. In the chromic chloride treated group, the wide space formed by shrinking of axoplasm was observed between the axon and myelin sheath and also some vacuoles were shown in the axoplasm and Schwann cell. 3. Chromium trioxide treated group doesn¡¯t show remarkable morphological changes except myelin sheath compared with chromic chloride treated group. From these results, chromic chloride and chromium trioxide induced damages in myelin sheath of sciatic nerve but chromic chloride showed more remarkable degenerative changes than those of chromium trioxide in axoplasm and Schwann cell.
